Splits #1 is the first piece from my Splits series. Originally painted in acrylic on canvas, it was also the first of my artworks to be released as a print, making it a foundational piece in the development of my work.
The series is built around the idea of splitting multiple characters apart and stitching their individual elements together to create an entirely new form. In this piece, fragments of faces, limbs, patterns, and abstract shapes collide to form a single creature, one that feels playful and familiar, but also strange and entirely its own.
The bold color, graphic composition, and layered character design bring together the different sides of my creative practice. These elements can originate in my picture books, other projects, or as standalone ideas, allowing the series to grow in endless directions and connect the different worlds I create.
Like The Giants, the Splits will adapt as I adapt, evolving alongside my style, technique, and subject matter. This series sits at the very core of what I’m creating as an artist: bringing separate characters, ideas, and visual languages together to make something completely new.
As the first work in the series, Splits #1 marks the beginning of that exploration and an important moment in my journey as an artist.
